Daniel Melubo has stood on the Roof of Africa 847 times. He knows every rock, every switchback, every trick the mountain plays. Here, he shares what Kilimanjaro really feels like — from the inside.

Day 1-2: The Forest

“People arrive excited, talking fast. The forest is warm, green, full of monkeys. Everyone thinks it’s easy. I let them enjoy it — the mountain will teach patience soon enough.”

Day 3-4: The Moorland

“Conversations get quieter. The air thins. People start to feel the altitude. Some get headaches. I tell them: pole pole — slowly, slowly. The mountain doesn’t care about your schedule.”

Day 5-6: The Alpine Desert

“The landscape becomes another planet. Giant groundsels — plants that look like they’re from a science fiction film. The wind picks up. Some people cry. Not from pain — from the beauty.”

Summit Night

“We start at midnight. Headlamps in a line. It’s cold — minus 15. Every step is effort. At Stella Point, the sun rises over the crater rim and paints the glaciers gold. People break down. They hug. They call home. The mountain gives you yourself back.”
