The Calcified Lake
Lake Natron is one of the most hostile bodies of water on Earth. The surface pH exceeds 10.5 and temperatures in the shallows can reach 60°C. The blood-red colour of the open water comes from the halophilic microorganisms (Cyanobacteria and Archaea) that thrive in the alkalinity. Animals that die in the lake are preserved — calcified — by the sodium carbonate in the water.
The alkalinity that makes the lake so hostile to most life makes it the perfect flamingo breeding environment: the caustic water protects the nesting islands from mammal predators. Between June and October, up to 1.2 million lesser flamingos breed on the salt islands in the lake centre — the largest flamingo congregation in the world.
Tanzania Adventure approaches the lake margins on foot with a Maasai guide for the most intimate flamingo encounter. The scale of the congregation — a pink horizon that seems to have no edge — produces a response that no photograph adequately prepares you for.
Oldoinyo Lengai &
Climbing the Mountain of God
Oldoinyo Lengai — "Mountain of God" in Maa — is the only active carbonatite volcano in the world. It erupts natrocarbonatite lava — a unique lava composition found nowhere else on Earth, black in daylight but glowing orange at night, that solidifies white when it meets moisture. The mountain is sacred to the Maasai and is one of the most geologically significant volcanoes on Earth.
The summit trek is a 6–8 hour round trip from the base village, departing before midnight to reach the crater rim at sunrise. The physical difficulty is significant: steep loose ash and rock for most of the ascent. The visual reward — looking into an active volcanic crater at dawn, with Lake Natron below, the Rift Valley beyond, and occasionally Kilimanjaro on the horizon — is unlike anything else in Tanzania.

Ancient Footprints
The community around Lake Natron maintains a more traditional lifestyle than Maasai communities closer to Arusha. The cultural visit Tanzania Adventure arranges is with the Engare Sero community — a guided walk with an elder who explains the relationship between the Maasai, the mountain, and the lake that has defined this landscape for centuries.
The Engare Sero riverbed near the lake shore contains a remarkable set of fossilised human and animal footprints preserved in volcanic ash approximately 5,000–10,000 years ago. The footprint site — often described as the largest and most diverse collection of hominin footprints in Africa — provides a direct physical connection to the human occupation of this landscape going back millennia.
The Engare Sero
Waterfall
The Engare Sero waterfall descends from the escarpment into a natural pool suitable for swimming — one of the most unexpected features in one of Tanzania's most remote landscapes. The contrast between the alkaline red lake and the fresh, clear waterfall pool is extreme and entirely specific to this location.
Tanzania Adventure includes the waterfall hike as a standard element of the Lake Natron programme. The walk from camp takes approximately 30 minutes. The pool is deep enough for swimming and cold enough to be genuinely refreshing in the heat of the afternoon.
