Eight destinations. Four ecosystems. The Great Migration. The world’s largest caldera. The roof of Africa. A UNESCO trading city on the Indian Ocean. Ancient baobabs and 3,000 elephants. The most intact marine park in East Africa. Tanzania contains everything.
The northern circuit covers the most famous wildlife destinations in Africa: the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. It is the most visited safari circuit in Tanzania for one simple reason — it delivers the most complete wildlife experience available in the shortest time.
The circuit is anchored by Arusha, connected by good roads and well-served airstrips. A five-night programme covering Serengeti and Ngorongoro produces extraordinary wildlife diversity. A seven-night programme adding Tarangire and Lake Manyara covers three completely different ecosystems and is Tanzania Adventure’s most consistently booked itinerary.
The northern circuit does not require prior safari experience — it is accessible, comprehensible, and consistent. Every park delivers what it promises. First-time visitors and returning safari travellers both find what they came for.
The southern circuit is where Tanzania keeps its secrets. Ruaha: 20,226 km² of wilderness with a vehicle at sightings. Nyerere: boat safaris on the Rufiji River with almost no other tourists. Mahale: habituated chimpanzees on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, accessible only by light aircraft. Katavi: the most extreme wildlife concentration in Africa in peak dry season.
The southern circuit requires fly-in access and a higher budget for the exclusive small camps that maintain the quality of the experience. Tanzania Adventure recommends it as a second Tanzania safari for clients who have already done the north — or as an extended first programme for clients with three weeks or more.
Both Zanzibar and Mafia Island combine naturally with any Tanzania safari programme. Zanzibar is the natural extension to the northern circuit — Stone Town, Mnemba Atoll diving, north coast beaches, spice farms. Mafia Island is the marine extension for clients who want whale sharks and pristine coral reef at one of the most protected marine parks in East Africa.
Tanzania Adventure arranges the full logistics: flights, accommodation, guide programmes, and the Zanzibar cultural visit with Grace — all managed as a single seamless programme from Arusha to the Indian Ocean.
5,895 metres. No technical climbing required. Eight days on the Lemosho Route. Five climate zones. Emmanuel Ngowi as guide — 280 summits, zero evacuations. Tanzania Adventure’s summit rate is 94% — the direct consequence of the Lemosho Route’s acclimatisation schedule and Emmanuel’s management of the ascent.
Kilimanjaro combines naturally with any northern circuit safari programme. The summit-to-Serengeti transition in 24 hours is one of the great contrasts in travel.
I asked the guide to summarise Tanzania. He thought for a moment. Then he said: "It contains everything." After ten days across four parks, one summit, and three days in Zanzibar, I had no disagreement.
The northern circuit is the most popular Tanzania safari routing for one simple reason: it delivers the most complete wildlife experience available in the shortest time. Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara cover the full range of northern Tanzania ecosystems — open savanna, enclosed caldera, acacia woodland, and Rift Valley forest — within a routing accessible from Arusha by road or a short flight.
Tanzania Adventure’s most booked northern circuit programmes: Classic Safari (5 nights, Serengeti + Ngorongoro), Full Northern Circuit (7 nights, adding Tarangire), and the extended Northern + Zanzibar programme (10+ nights).
The southern circuit requires fly-in access from Dar es Salaam and a higher budget for the exclusive camps that maintain the quality of the experience. Tanzania Adventure recommends it as a second Tanzania safari for clients who have already done the northern circuit. The wildlife encounters in the south — Ruaha lion density, Nyerere boat safari, Mahale chimpanzee trekking, Katavi hippo concentration — are categorically different from anything available in the north.
