5,895 metres. The highest point on the African continent. Five climate zones traversed on foot over eight days. No technical climbing required. Just determination, time for acclimatisation, and a guide who has been to the summit 280 times and will wake you at midnight with coffee and the certainty that you will get there.
The Lemosho Route approaches from the west through wilderness moorland with almost no other trekkers in the northern section. Eight days allows proper altitude adaptation at the Shira Plateau (3,900m) before the final push. Tanzania Adventure operates the Lemosho as its standard Kilimanjaro programme — it is the route with the best acclimatisation profile and the route that produces our 94% summit rate.
The eight-day programme includes a built-in acclimatisation day at Shira Camp 2 at 3,900m, and a critical Lava Tower day that takes you to 4,600m for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,950m to sleep — the “climb high, sleep low” protocol that is the single most important physiological factor in summit success.
The Lemosho is also the most scenically varied route on the mountain. The western approach traverses the full sequence of climate zones — from primary rainforest through heath and moorland, across the Shira Plateau, through the alpine desert, to the arctic summit — with the most dramatic views of any route. Book four to six months in advance for preferred departure dates.
The Northern Circuit is the longest and least-trafficked route on Kilimanjaro. It circumnavigates the northern face, providing the best acclimatisation profile of any available route and passing through high-altitude wilderness that sees almost no other trekkers.
Nine days of extraordinary landscape, near-complete solitude in the northern section, and the highest summit rate of any route make this the choice for clients who want the most complete Kilimanjaro experience. This is the route for serious trekkers who want Kilimanjaro done properly. Limited availability — book six or more months in advance.
The Machame “Whiskey Route” is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro for a reason: the scenery is consistently dramatic, the terrain is more varied than the Marangu route, and the seven-day itinerary provides reasonable acclimatisation. The Shira Plateau section is visually stunning — a volcanic caldera at 3,700m with views of the Kibo summit cone.
Tanzania Adventure operates the Machame as a seven-day programme with an added acclimatisation half-day built into the Shira section wherever scheduling permits. The summit rate on the Machame is lower than the Lemosho due to the shorter schedule, but the scenic quality is comparable and the route is appropriate for clients with limited time.
The Marangu is the only route with permanent hut accommodation — a consideration for clients who prefer not to sleep in tents. It is also the most compressed schedule, which is the primary reason its summit rate is lower than the Lemosho or Northern Circuit.
Tanzania Adventure is honest with clients about the Marangu rate: approximately 65–70% summit success on a standard six-day programme. We add an extra acclimatisation day wherever client schedules allow, which meaningfully improves outcomes. For budget-constrained clients or those with hut accommodation preference, the Marangu with Tanzania Adventure is a solid programme honestly managed.
The Rongai is the only route approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border. Drier conditions than the southern routes make it the best choice during the long rains season (April–May) when other routes are muddy and visibility limited. Buffalo, eland, and occasionally elephant are encountered on the lower forested slopes.
Seven days provides good acclimatisation and the route offers a different perspective of the mountain — the northern face is less trafficked than the south and the views across the Amboseli plains into Kenya are extraordinary on clear mornings.
The Umbwe is the most challenging and most direct route on Kilimanjaro. The ascent is steep, the terrain exposed, and the daily altitude gain is the highest of any route. Tanzania Adventure does not recommend the Umbwe for first-time high-altitude trekkers — it requires both physical fitness and prior experience at altitude.
For experienced mountain walkers who have previously trekked above 4,500m and are comfortable on exposed terrain, the Umbwe provides the most dramatic and least crowded Kilimanjaro experience. The summit views from the Umbwe approach are unlike any other route on the mountain.
I am sixty-one years old. I told Emmanuel at the summit that this was the hardest thing I had done since my children were born. He smiled and said that was the correct comparison. I have not stopped thinking about what he meant by that.
Whether you are travelling as a family, celebrating a honeymoon, or chasing the perfect photograph — Kilimanjaro delivers something specific to you.
Kilimanjaro is suitable from age 10 with the right route, right pace, and a guide who has brought families to the summit before. Emmanuel has.
Summit together and descend to the Indian Ocean. Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar in 24 hours is one of the great romantic travel sequences.
Solo Kilimanjaro with Tanzania Adventure means one guide, one pace, one set of priorities. Emmanuel adjusts everything around you.
The roof of Africa followed by the Serengeti migration. Arctic summit to wildlife plains in 24 hours. This sequence exists nowhere else in travel.
The Furtwängler Glacier in first light. The cloud layer below you at 5,000m. The crater rim at dawn. Kilimanjaro produces images unavailable at any lower altitude.
The highest point on the African continent. No technical climbing. Just you, eight days, and Emmanuel who has done this 280 times and treats each summit as the first.
The most important thing to understand about Kilimanjaro is that it is an altitude challenge, not a technical mountaineering challenge. There are no ropes, no crampons, no vertical ice. The summit is reached by walking uphill for a long time. The difficulty is in the body’s response to oxygen reduction — at Uhuru Peak, the atmosphere provides 49% of the oxygen available at sea level.
The difference between a successful summit and a failed one is almost never fitness. It is almost always insufficient acclimatisation time. The Lemosho Route’s 94% summit rate versus the Marangu Route’s 65% is entirely explained by the number of nights spent above 3,500 metres before the summit push. More time above altitude equals more successful summits.
Three months of consistent cardiovascular training is the minimum recommended preparation. Running, cycling, hiking with a weighted daypack — any aerobic activity four to five times per week. You need to sustain moderate aerobic effort for six to eight hours per day across eight consecutive days. The fitness requirement is comparable to a half-marathon training programme, not an Ironman.
Altitude sickness is not correlated with fitness level. Athletes and sedentary people are equally susceptible. Tanzania Adventure recommends discussing acetazolamide (Diamox) with your GP before departure — it is not compulsory on the Lemosho Route but reduces symptom severity for susceptible clients.
Emmanuel Ngowi has led 280+ Kilimanjaro summits in 16 years with Tanzania Adventure. He is KINAPA-licensed, WAFA-certified (Wilderness Advanced First Aid), and has never required a medical evacuation from the mountain. His management of the ascent pace — slow, deliberate, consistent — is the single most important variable in a successful Tanzania Adventure Kilimanjaro programme. Emmanuel starts clients at a pace that feels too slow and maintains it precisely. Pole pole — slowly, slowly — is not a slogan. It is Emmanuel’s operating principle.
Every Tanzania Adventure Kilimanjaro programme includes: KINAPA-licensed senior guide, full porter team (max 20kg per porter per KINAPA regulations), all mountain permits and conservation fees, quality tents and sleeping mats, all meals on the mountain plus unlimited hot drinks, emergency oxygen and wilderness first aid kit, summit certificate, KIA airport transfers, and pre-climb briefing and gear check.
Tanzania Adventure’s porter programme exceeds KINAPA minimum requirements. Porters are paid 40% above the KINAPA minimum wage and carry a maximum of 20kg in compliance with regulations. All porter equipment — tents, sleeping bags, jackets — is provided by Tanzania Adventure. Our porter retention rate exceeds 85% annually, the direct consequence of conditions that treat the people who make every summit possible as professionals.
Tanzania Adventure’s most requested adventure programme combines an eight-day Kilimanjaro ascent with a seven-day northern circuit safari — fifteen days total. The transition from arctic summit to Serengeti wildlife plains in 24 hours is one of the great experiential contrasts in travel. The guide handover from Emmanuel (Kilimanjaro) to James Kimaro (Serengeti) is a specific process: the two guides brief each other on the client’s physical state, interests, and questions that emerged during the climb, ensuring continuity of knowledge rather than a fresh start.
The Kilimanjaro glaciers have retreated dramatically over the past century — the Furtwängler Glacier near the summit represents approximately 15% of the ice coverage visible in 1900. Tanzania Adventure guides brief every group on the glacier situation: the ice at summit level is a disappearing natural feature. Future generations of climbers may not see what you will see. That knowledge changes the quality of attention brought to the summit moment.
Emergency oxygen is carried on every Tanzania Adventure Kilimanjaro programme. Emmanuel monitors the specific symptoms that indicate high-altitude cerebral or pulmonary oedema — medical emergencies requiring immediate descent — and manages descent if necessary. All associated costs of any medical situation, including helicopter evacuation if required, are covered by Tanzania Adventure’s operational insurance.
Kilimanjaro is climbable year-round. The two optimal dry seasons are January–March and June–October. Tanzania Adventure offers full-year programming with honest seasonal advice at the enquiry stage. Bookings require a 30% deposit and full payment 60 days before departure. Permits are non-refundable once purchased. Travel insurance covering altitude sickness cancellation is strongly recommended and Tanzania Adventure can recommend policies specifically designed for Kilimanjaro trekkers.
